The 1,000-Word Annual Septic Health Checklist

Most homeowners in the Gulf Coast only think about their septic system once every few years when it needs to be pumped. However, a lot can happen in 365 days. Heavy rains can shift soil, tree roots can grow inches into your pipes, and leaking toilets can silently overload your drainfield. This annual checklist is designed to help Mobile homeowners identify small issues before they become expensive repairs.

Visual Inspections: What to Look For

Start in your yard. Are there any depressions or "sinkholes" forming around the tank? This could indicate a structural failure or a leaking pipe. Check the vegetation over the drainfield—is it significantly greener or taller than the rest of the yard? While it looks nice, it’s a sign of a saturated field. Inside the house, check every toilet for a "silent leak." Put a few drops of food coloring in the tank; if color appears in the bowl after 15 minutes without flushing, you are wasting hundreds of gallons of water a week and drowning your septic bacteria.
